When playing sports, the big finish is vital to a success story. The Bismarck State College Mystics Rocket League team proved this fact on Wed. April 15, when they snatched a win from the jaws of defeat. The first half of the 7-game series left the Mystics down 3 games to 1. After regrouping and making defense adjustments, the final 3 games added to the win column. Pressure was mounting during the final 2 games. Both were 0-0 at the end of five minute regulation and pushed to overtime. Clutch shots from BSC brought a satisfying conclusion of pressure with almost visible fireworks. Skirtie (Sean Purdy), PacoJ1 (Jackson Torres), and Risser (Gran Risser) joined in celebration with teammates and coaches.
“I thought you guys were done for,” Esports Coach Lance Geving said, following the sudden victory.
The team faced a true challenge as their opponent came prepared for the competition.
“[Hesston College] really studied us,” Purdy added. “Especially after a previous match up at the end of the regular season.”
This season has been big. BSC has proved themselves a formidable opponent for others in the NECC. All post-season was packed with moments to remember. The celebration was loud and visible to all who passed the Gate City Bank Esports Room in the Student Union. The match had even garnered BSC students who were curious to see if the Mystics could pull through.
“I’m so glad I stayed to watch [it],” BSC Student Jayne Yokom said.
BSC Rocket League scored on the number 1 seed to crush the other team and get into the number 1 seed in the conference. Before the final match, Mystics Esports stars played two other games. A win above the next conference’s number 4 opened the door to a semi-final game. The winning streak continued through the semi-finals with a decisive 4-1 game victory.
For the remaining teams, the post season was not a reality this season. League of Legends, Valorant, and Madden fell short of the ranking needed for a chance at their respective championships but did not let the conclusion of their season detract from the excitement.
With the opening of the Bavendick Center, BSC Esports will get an upgraded venue for future play. The team will be alongside the other student athletes to compete once again. Keep up with the Esports team to catch a game or two in the fall.
