Most athletes rely on teammates for motivation, but for Brynn and Macy Crane, that motivation has been there their entire lives. As twins competing on the cross-country and track team, they share not only practices and races, but also a unique bond that pushes them to improve every day.
For Brynn, having her twin by her side makes the experience more enjoyable. She described Macy as a “built-in training partner,” adding that she genuinely likes practicing with her. Some of their favorite moments come during races, especially when they are “neck and neck” at the finish line, turning competition into a shared experience.
While their connection is strong now, it wasn’t always that way. Macy explained that when they first started track in high school, their relationship was much more competitive.
“It’s definitely more friendly now,” she said. Over time, that competitiveness has grown into something more supportive, which has made the sport more enjoyable for both of them. Now, instead of competing against each other, they work together. Whether it’s pacing one another during workouts or encouraging each other to “lock in,” their teamwork has become one of their biggest strengths. Macy shared that sometimes one of them will take on the role of the pacer during practice, helping the other stay on track and improve.
Their teamwork even carries into races. At a recent meet, Macy ran the 1500-meter and the 4x400 relay, and she noted how different it felt without Brynn in the same race. She mentioned that she often uses Brynn to help set her pace, since Brynn usually starts out in front. Even so, Macy emphasized that she does not rely on Brynn entirely, but having her there is still an advantage.
Like any siblings, the sisters have their moments. Both admitted that if one of them gets upset, they simply give each other space. However, they don’t let those moments interfere with their performance or their relationship.
What truly sets them apart is how they see each other. When asked to describe Brynn in one word, Macy chose “determined,” explaining that no matter what setbacks Brynn faces, especially injuries, she always comes back stronger. Brynn, on the other hand, found it hard to sum Macy up in just one word, but described her as someone who brings a sense of calm to those around her, especially before a race.
Looking ahead, both twins share similar goals. They hope to continue improving and eventually compete in the 5K, building on the progress they’ve already made together.
In a sport that often focuses on individual performance, Brynn and Macy show that success can still be shared. From pushing each other in practice to crossing finish lines side by side, their journey proves that sometimes the strongest teammate you can have is the one who has been with you from the very beginning.
