With the 2024-2025 school year coming to an end, a new batch of students are graduating from high school and plan on going to college. Moving from high school life to college life can be a shock to some, so how can you lessen the stress of the transition? Tips from current students and advisors can help transitioning into college life and even help while attending college.
Staff working in the Mystician office were asked what advice they would give to incoming students at Bismarck State College. Mass Communications student Mygel Porter had some advice.
“Don’t procrastinate. Do not go to parties, they’re overrated, but go out and mingle. Don’t be a homebody, go to all the school events and try to make new friends,” he said. “Get involved with work-study jobs on campus, join a club or join a sports team, even intramural sports. Don’t overload yourself, take it light and easy.”
Cathleen Ruch, Director for Student Success Advising, was also asked for advice on college life She shared some of her thoughts for students.
“My best advice is to grit it out. No matter what happens, you will always get through it. You will persevere through those tough times and you can’t let them bring you down.”
She also talked about how important making friends is and how to effectively make friends.
“Join a club, or an intramural sport. Just put yourself out there.”
With BSC’s student body being approximately 4,000 students, more are planning on attending in the future. By staying proactive, getting involved, and persevering through tough moments, students can set themselves up for a successful and rewarding college experience. Nobody should be alone here at BSC, and there are plenty of ways to get people to talk to, whether that be close friends or counselors at the MACC. Good luck to all the new students coming to college in the fall. This is the beginning of the rest of your life!
