Tyler Hansen Earns Title of BSC's First National Rodeo Champion
This summer, Bismarck State College Senior Tyler Hansen won the college’s first-ever national rodeo championship. On June 20, during the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming, Hansen achieved a first-place finish in the men’s tie-down roping category as well as in the men’s all-around with a 10th-place finish in team roping. His scores at the
competition included an 8.4 in round one, a 10.9 in round two, a 9.1 in round three, and a 9.9 in round four.
Hansen grew up in Kildeer, North Dakota, where he began participating in rodeo as a 6th grader.
“My parents and grandparents had done it, so I just kind of figured I’d go into it too,” Hansen said.
From there, Hansen quickly made his mark on the sport. He won the junior high state competition in ribbon roping and calf roping and emerged victorious at the high school state competition in the category of tie down.
After high school, Hansen moved to Ranger, Texas, and attended Ranger
College for two years before transferring to Bismarck State College in 2024 for the final two years of his degree in
instrumentation and control technology.
“My favorite part of rodeo is the competition and meeting new people,” Hansen said.
He said he plans to continue doingcircuit rodeoing while furthering his career in energy transfer.
Hansen’s successes came during rodeo’s second season at BSC following its return to campus in 2024 after a 23-year absence. The school’s rodeo team, composed of 19 women and 18 men, more than doubled in size between the 2024-2025 and the 2025-2026 school years.
BSC’s team saw several other top-ten finishes at the College National Finals Rodeo in June. Parker Sandstrom, a sophomore at BSC, tied for third in steer wrestling. Freshman Kale Hansen finished 7th in
tie-down roping.
