The Story of "Anastasia: The Musical"

“Anastasia: The Musical” is based on the 1997 film of the same name by 20th Century Fox. The animated movie “Anastasia” adapted the legend of the Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia, who was rumoured to have escaped the execution of the Russian Imperial family. Don Bluth and Gary Goldman directed the film.

The story of the film follows Anya, an orphaned woman who cannot recall her past but knows she must go to Paris. She believes something–or someone–is waiting for her in France. Anya meets Dmitry, a wily con-artist and his friend Vlad. The two plan to use Anya as a false Anastasia and get the reward from the old Grand Duchess in Paris. The main conflict in the film is supernatural and uses a Disney-esque villain in the form of Rasputin, a magic-user who seeks to destroy the Romanov family. In the film, the historic destruction of the Romanov family by the Bolesheviks is replaced by Rasputin. In “Anastasia: The Musical,” the Boleshevik general Gleb replaces Rasputin as the main antagonist.

“Anastasia: The Musical” was first performed as a pre-Broadway run in Hartford, Connecticut. The show finally premiered at the Broadthrust Theatre in April 2017 and has since been produced worldwide. The musical contains six songs from the film and 12 new musical numbers. Those who enjoyed the film may appreciate the live production of their favorite musical numbers and seeing the story unfold on stage.
