Mystics Fall to Lancers in Volleyball Home Opener
In front of a crowd of 1,020 fans, opposite hitter Reese Duchscherer elevated on a set from Aubrey Flynn and powered the volleyball through two defenders to secure a 25-23 set one victory. The crowd erupted, and the Mystics varsity team won their first ever set in the new Bavendick Center. However, Bismarck State College’s strong home crowd, promotional rally towels, and first set win, wasn’t enough, as the Mount Marty Lancers stormed back, winning the next three sets by a combined 17 points.
The Lancers rode strong defense and aggressive inside offense to spoil the Mystics’ first match in the new athletic center. The sets went 25-23, 17-25, 19-25, and 22-25.
Transfers Ashlee Stanger and Aislyn Hogan impressed in their first action at home. Stanger, an outside hitter coming over from Southern Idaho, picked up a game high 15 kills while hitting .281. Hogan, a setter from Indiana University East, continued to shine with 35 assists and five kills. Key returner Reese Duchsherer added 12 kills and 10 digs, and middle blocker Summer Thomas picked up five kills and four blocks.
On the other side, Mount Marty’s Caitlin Guenther was too much for Bismarck, putting up 12 kills on .231 hitting with two blocks. Jaya Wachholtz and Adi Indahl totalled 22 kills in the match, and freshman Maycee Williams had a brilliant day, with five service aces and 21 digs.
The Mystics (2-3) continue their second season in the Frontier Conference on the road for the next two weeks before returning home to face number six Providence on Sept. 18 for Light up the Bav Night.
